Tor Browser vs Mullvad Browser: Key Differences
Tor Browser and Mullvad Browser share anti-fingerprinting defenses but differ in IP masking, network routing, speed, and the threat models they suit.
The short answer: Mullvad Browser is Tor Browser with the Tor network taken out. Same codebase, same anti-fingerprinting engineering, same locked-down defaults — but your traffic leaves your machine over your ordinary connection instead of a three-relay circuit. That single difference decides which one you should install, and it is a bigger difference than the shared DNA suggests.
Pick Tor Browser when websites must not learn your IP address. Pick Mullvad Browser when you want the strongest available fingerprinting resistance at normal browsing speed and you are handling the IP problem some other way, usually with a VPN. Neither is a general-purpose upgrade over the browser you use now, and installing the wrong one produces either frustration or false confidence.

Where the two are identical
Mullvad Browser was built in collaboration between Mullvad and the Tor Project, and it is a fork of Tor Browser rather than a fresh Firefox skin. According to Mullvad’s product documentation, it ships with the same defaults that make Tor Browser resistant to tracking:
- Uniform fingerprinting surface. Both browsers standardise the values a site can read: window dimensions are quantised via letterboxing, the timezone is reported as UTC, the font list is restricted to a fixed bundle, and hardware-revealing APIs are blocked or normalised.
- No persistent state between sessions. History, cookies, and site data are discarded when the browser closes. Nothing is designed to survive a restart.
- Third-party cookies blocked outright, plus state partitioning by first-party site, so a tracker embedded across many sites cannot stitch those visits together.
- A conservative extension policy. Mullvad Browser ships uBlock Origin and NoScript pre-installed; Tor Browser ships NoScript. Both expect you to leave that set exactly as it is — Privacy Guides is explicit that removing or reconfiguring the bundled extensions makes your fingerprint distinct from every other user of the same build.
- A security level slider that trades functionality for attack surface, disabling JavaScript entirely at the strictest setting.
That last point is the part most people underestimate. The Tor Browser design document frames anti-fingerprinting as a crowd problem rather than a personal one: the goal is not to make your browser unreadable, it is to make every installation report the same values so that no individual stands out. Every setting you personalise removes you from that crowd. Changing the window size, adding a favourite extension, or installing extra fonts makes you more identifiable in a browser engineered around sameness, which is the opposite of how hardening usually works.

Tor Browser’s routing is what earns it the anonymity claim. Traffic passes through an entry guard that sees your IP but not your destination, a middle relay that sees neither endpoint, and an exit node that sees your destination but not your IP. No single operator holds both halves. The Tor Browser manual documents the bridges and pluggable transports that also hide the fact that you are using Tor at all, which matters where Tor itself is blocked or treated as suspicious.
Mullvad Browser has none of that. Load it on a bare connection and the site you visit reads your real IP exactly as it would in Chrome. What it gives you instead is a browser whose readable characteristics are shared with every other user of the same build, at full speed, with no exit-node CAPTCHAs and no broken video. Which threat does each one actually answer
“A website must never be able to tie this session to my identity or location.” Tor Browser, with no substitutions. This covers whistleblowing, research into hostile subjects, accessing information under censorship, and anything where an IP address in a server log is itself the risk. “Ad tech is building a persistent profile of me across sites and I have already dealt with cookies.” Mullvad Browser. Cookie hygiene does nothing against canvas, audio, WebGL, and font-metric fingerprinting, and a browser that looks like every other installation is the strongest answer available for daily use.
“I need both, but Tor is too slow for the work.” Mullvad Browser plus a VPN. The VPN replaces the IP-hiding function that Tor provides, at the cost of consolidating trust in one provider. “I want fewer ads and less tracking on a browser my family will not complain about.” Neither. Both of these browsers break sites, forget logins on purpose, and are hostile to customisation. Where LibreWolf and Brave sit against them
The comparison people actually search for is usually a three-way: Brave, LibreWolf, Mullvad Browser. They are not competing on the same axis.
Brave takes the opposite anti-fingerprinting philosophy. Instead of making everyone look identical, it randomises canvas, audio, and WebGL readouts per site and per session so that a tracker sees a different device every time. Randomisation defeats naive cross-site linking well and costs nothing in usability, but it makes you distinctive rather than anonymous — a fingerprint that changes constantly is itself a signal. Brave also supports every site without configuration, which neither Tor Browser nor Mullvad Browser can claim.
LibreWolf is a hardened Firefox fork: telemetry stripped, privacy.resistFingerprinting enabled, uBlock Origin bundled, and no vendor search deal. It sits between Firefox and Mullvad Browser. Because it inherits Firefox’s resistFingerprinting implementation, it gets uniformity-style protection, but its user base is far smaller than Firefox’s and it permits far more personalisation, so the crowd you blend into is thinner. The ordering that follows from this is not “which is most private” but which mechanism you need. Tor Browser owns network anonymity. Mullvad Browser owns fingerprinting resistance at speed. LibreWolf is the tinkerer’s middle ground. Brave is the best default for people who will never open a settings page. Three mistakes that undo either browser
- Personalising the window. Maximising Mullvad Browser or Tor Browser, or dragging the window to an unusual size, defeats letterboxing and hands trackers a distinguishing measurement. Leave the default size alone.
- Adding extensions. Every extra extension changes the browser’s observable behaviour and shrinks your anonymity set. Both browsers ship the blocking you need.
- Logging in. Signing into a personal account reattaches your identity to the session instantly, whatever the network path underneath. This is the single most common way Tor users are deanonymised, and it is entirely a user-behaviour failure rather than a tooling one.

Cost and how to choose
Both are free and open source, with no accounts, tiers, or paid features. Tor Browser is distributed from torproject.org; Mullvad Browser is distributed from Mullvad’s site and does not require a Mullvad VPN subscription to use.
A practical rule: install Tor Browser and keep it for the handful of tasks where an IP address in a log would matter, and run Mullvad Browser behind a VPN for the ordinary browsing you want kept off your advertising profile. They coexist happily; running both is not redundant, because they are covering different failures.
